The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking qualified candidates for four positions within the Human Factors Research and Engineering Group. The successful candidate provides advice, expertise, and technical support on the planning, design, development, and conduct of a variety of human factors programs and projects in support of the research and engineering for civil aviation. Areas of concentration include: air traffic control systems, air traffic control operations, technical operations support, flight standards, flight deck operations, aviation maintenance operations, crew personnel selection and training, and Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance system integration. Develops and manages research requirements, solicits and evaluates project proposals, plans and manages a research and/or engineering program. Identifies and assesses existing or potential issues, risks, and solutions involving human factors and human performance in civil aviation operations; plans multidisciplinary research or engineering projects; collects and analyzes data; prepares results and conclusions; writes reports; and presents findings and recommendations. Plans, defends, and manages budgets in support of the research and engineering projects and coordinates research and engineering programs with supervisors, managers, contractors, operating officials and other team members.

Program Director for Human Factors

The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Program Director for Human Factors. The Program Director is responsible for leading a major agency-wide human factors program. The Program Director provides executive direction and leadership on all human factors research and engineering matters and provides executive-level advice, guidance, and recommendations to the FAA Administrator, Air Traffic Organization (ATO) Chief Operating Officer, and Federal Acquisition Executive, as appropriate. The incumbent acts as the focal point within and outside the agency for FAA human factors research management and provides expertise on human factors engineering applications. The incumbent reports directly to the Director, Research and Technology Development, located in the ATO – NextGen & Operations Planning service unit.

The candidate must show successful completion of a full 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's, or higher, degree that included a major course of study, or equivalent, in psychology.

Human Factors Engineer

Candidate will provide direct support to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Air Traffic Operation En Route and Oceanic Finance and Planning team. The candidate will assist in the identification, tracking, coordination, and development of ATO-E Air Traffic Planning and Research, Development and International risks and issues. The candidate will use quantitative analysis, process control methodologies, data collecting and data mining, and person-centered research evaluation as the empirical basis for solution development.

Candidate must have a broad understanding of HF principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Candidate must be a self-starter, a team player, be flexible, and possess the abilty to work under pressure and adapt quickly to a fast-paced work environment. All candidates must demonstrate expertise in the field of human factors and statistical application. Background in the identification and application of Human Factors (HF) Engineering principles in the design, development, test or deployment of large scale software development systems a plus. Candidate must have excellent communication skills (written & verbal), and be proficient with Microsoft Office products. FAA experience a plus. Requires a Bachelor’s of Science degree in applied or experimental psychology, human factors, ergonomics, sociology, or industrial engineering from an accredited college or university.

Advanced degree in those areas is preferred.

Assets:

  • Skill in leading teams in the prduction of integrate projects.
  • Skill in performing analyses during the initial phases of a program to determine functional needs and design attributes.
  • Skill in the application of human factors engineering to the design of systems.
  • Skill in working with user teams during requirements development, system design and testing.
  • Skill in working on interdisciplinary teams including the advocacy of human factors in the context of cost and schedule program constraints.

Experience in aviation systems and operations, especially air traffic control.

Accessibility Analyst

SSB has an immediate opening available for an Accessibility Analyst. The Accessibility Analyst will work with public sector accounts, onsite to provide in-process compliance support and guidance. The Accessibility Analyst will work directly with customers to support Section 508 compliance initiatives across a wide variety of IT systems. Prior knowledge of Section 508 is a plus for this position but a strong technical background in Web based technologies is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Work with client staff to handle inquiries relating to Section 508 technical provisions, compliance policy, and acquisition processes
  • Consultant with client project managers and developers to ensure all aspects of the development lifecycle support the creation of Section 508 compliant applications
  • Perform reviews of Commercial Off The Shelf ("COTS") products and vendor deliverables to ensure their compliance with Section 508
  • Develop and deliver presentations relating to accessibility and Section 508 to educate client staff

Qualifications

This position is a technical position and the ideal candidate would hold a Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) degree in Computer Science or a related field. In addition the ideal candidate would have:

  • 3 or more years of experience working in a development environment that required accessibility considerations during implementation.
  • Experience with relevant accessibility standards including WCAG and Section 508.
  • Technical familiarity core web based technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience creating content in Adobe Flash and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies including JAWS, Window-Eyes, Dragon Dictate, MAGic, and ZoomText.
  • Ability to project a positive and professional image to the public and SSB Bart Group clients.
  • Ability to work independently.
